Description
Vintage: 2019
Origin: Stellenbosch
Varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon 65% / Merlot 35%
Tasting Notes:
In South Africa Malbec is most commonly used as one of five varietals in a red Bordeaux blend. On Dornier the wine made from this grape with its thick-skinned berry and green flesh tends to be full and juicy with aromas of dark berries and plum with hints of violet that is typical of the varietal. The palate is rich in texture and shows characteristics of berry, dark chocolate and juicy fruit. The finish is long with a balanced acidity and fine tannin structure.
Vintage Conditions:
2019 was an outstanding harvest in the Stellenbosch area that produced wines of great character. The grapes are from our Groenkloof farm on the slopes of Stellenbosch Mountain. The soil is composed of decomposed granite. The vines get full sun which allows for optimum development of rich berry characters and ripe tannins in this blend.
Fermentation and Ageing:
Although Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are great blending partners we ferment and age every component of both varieties of this blend separately until final blending just prior to bottling. This wine was aged in 30% new French oak barrels with the remainder being second and third fill barrels for 18 months. The 201 blend consists of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot
Food Pairing:
Best with beef, lamb and game dishes. Will also pair well with dishes enhanced with black pepper and cloves. Other great pairings include rich duck dishes, quail, roast lamb and beef.
